I also understood Shawn to be saying that WAI wants a high bar for the contrast in this image. Ah okay, well if we take a quick look, we see the words "Web Accessibility initiative” which per the guideline shoudl be 14px-16px, but must be no less than 12px. The icons are about twice that, thus should always be at least 24px (equivalent). And: I was analizing the design only on contrast. OPINION ON THE ICON DESIGNS If you would like an opinion on the icon designs regarding making a “good example” of accessible design, then these fail not due to contrast but due to too-thin of a stroke width. If we look at examples of design for ease of recognition and discernibility, you’ll notice that hollow thin outlines are generally not used. Again, like all things in perception you can not say that “solid is always better than hollow icons” as there are a number if independent factors. But solid icons have a naturally lower spatial frequency, meaning better contrast especially for people with impairments. There are still cases where an “online type” works better due to having “fine details” or importantly, somethign expected to be hollow, such as a magnifying glass or a speech bubble. Nevertheless, studies have shown that by and large, solid icons, especially representing real objects, tend to be more recognizable and discernable. And hollow icons are assisted by using bold outlines combined with some solid details. In the present case, the hand is better as a solid, and the brain woeks better as a solid (identifying that it is the focus) and the head outline around the brain would do well to be at least twice ther present thickness. This applies similarly to the other icoes: either the “white” of the eye or the pupil would be better solid, for the ear, a single thick solid line instead of two thin lines, etc. FWIW I am generally influenced by Raymond Loewy. The direction he took roward modern icon/logo design is still present all around us. Simple/solid. While there is a lack of research in this specific area (icon vs lexical processing) it is reasonable to assume that the minimum for “spot reading” (letter by letter recognition) is a useful measure for such icons. Lovie-Kitchin determined that spot reading contrast requirements are about a third of the requirements for fluent reading. > The 1/3rd requirement is where the “absolute minimums” are derived from. 30 for text (1/3rd of 90) and 15 for thick non text (1/3rd of 45). Because these are thin line drawings, though otherwise large, I’d say a useful minimum falls somewhere between 15 and 30. Since I have been rounding up out of an abundance of caution, 30 would be a very reasonable minimum for those icons in that specific use case. An example would be #b49c27 against the same blue background, which for the line weight APCA reports as suitable for “non-text”. > Baring further research, the colors indicated are more than sufficient for this specific use case. > Please le me know if that answers this question.
