Interestingly, both responses have preferred the 1st example, which would fail non-text contrast depending on how you interpret ‘visual boundaries’. 1st example: The text (5.6:1), icons (4.6:1) and bottom-borders (3.3:1) have reasonable contrast, but if you interpret the left/right/top boundary as part of the visible boundary, the light grey on white does not meet non-text contrast. 2nd example: The all-round border (just) meets 3:1, but the text is 3.7:1. I believe it has had a some testing [1], and that in practice the text + underline is enough to indicate the field. It isn’t a question we’ve looked at AFAIK. If you assumed you could not see the background light-grey, the underline would still be enough to indicate the field. Can we consider that the ‘visual boundary’ indicator? -Alastair 1] https://twitter.com/sundress/status/994169300368769027 From: Erich Manser From my perspective (using Invert Colors and resizing to about the size of my iPhone X) the example in #1 is more visible, and text contrast appears to be higher, so that I have an easier time identifying input fields. My hunch would be that #2 is the one that is worse for text contrast. In the usage section [3] for text inputs are two side-by-side examples (under “choosing the right text field”), I’d like to know if either appears easier to see & understand? There isn’t a direct anchor in the page, but the two images are: * https://material.io/design/assets/172e_wQpXZN14fNFnK8SytESS_hJDn6Si/textfields-type-filled.png<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__material.io_design_assets_172e-5FwQpXZN14fNFnK8SytESS-5FhJDn6Si_textfields-2Dtype-2Dfilled.png&d=DwMGaQ&c=jf_iaSHvJObTbx-siA1ZOg&r=DM4tpGs9J9ZJmwQWSDx3Rr1GGW-XiciGxFeqsAMqIGE&m=dns8XNifHkCWLdKw53puukyo96sKaqY0kmuaH9ObsCo&s=O1OPK-ySxV8lJoNT9LlzyKEx0TEOPqhbJ2dhPFsiZiE&e=> * https://material.io/design/assets/1Kezf2nmTVbQdOfNajrotDxeIKs1WlwHl/textfields-type-stroke.png<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__material.io_design_assets_1Kezf2nmTVbQdOfNajrotDxeIKs1WlwHl_textfields-2Dtype-2Dstroke.png&d=DwMGaQ&c=jf_iaSHvJObTbx-siA1ZOg&r=DM4tpGs9J9ZJmwQWSDx3Rr1GGW-XiciGxFeqsAMqIGE&m=dns8XNifHkCWLdKw53puukyo96sKaqY0kmuaH9ObsCo&s=BJYNninCmRX44AQKgFuxR2mxrgl348Zh79bdPziJSvo&e=> I suggest resizing until it’s around the physical size of a phone screen. One of these fits the non-text contrast guideline better (but worse for text-contrast), but which is better for LV folks?
