I think the social web working group is trying to achieve similar goals

http://www.w3.org/2013/socialweb/social-wg-charter.html

But not due until end of next year, and I am not sure how much linked data
in the spec

Most of the group, imho, are not focused on LD. However, there is a
contingent that want to build the social web on top of linked data
standards such as linked data platform.

Personally, I think your approach is the best way and extending opegraph to
the whole web makes a lot of sense.

For your use case my thoughts are :

1. status updates go in a timeline graph

2. pictures go in a document in the timeline

3. documents can be annotated and searched

4. likes or even payments operate in the same way between two URIs and with
an optional context

I would also look at openlink data spaces
