RE: UML => OWL, SKOS => OWL?

Leo, I would also call your attention to our efforts converting NIEM UML models into OWL. The source code can be found here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ciem/.

I can also dig up the corresponding slides from Balisage, if you are interested.

Hi, Leo.

You may interested also in the work done by Simon Cox in the geo domain. See, e.g., "An explicit OWL representation of ISO/OGC Observations and Measurements"

http://ceur-ws.org/Vol-1063/paper1.pdf

Other work, again in the geo domain, has been carried out on INSPIRE - the legal and technical framework meant to set up a EU-wide data and service infrastructure of information concerning the environment [1]. More precisely, this work focussed on the UML to RDF/OWL conversion of the data models concerning the 34 INSPIRE themes [2].

The relevant documentation and the resulting RDF vocs / OWL ontologies are publicly available from:

Hope this helps

Andrea

Excellent, Atilla! Do you have a copy of Moein’s MSc thesis?

Thanks much,

Hi Leo,
Some years ago I did some work on UML=>OWL conversion and putting the scheme to use. The following were published:

- MSc thesis completed under my direction: MEHRULHASSANI, Moein, Developing Ontology-Based Applications of Semantic Web Using UML to OWL Conversion, Eastern Mediterranean Univ., July 2008.

- Conference paper: Moein Mehrolhassani and Atilla Elçi (2008): OLS: An Ontology Based Information System. Proceedings of International Workshop on Ontology Alignment and Visualization (OnAV-2008), held in conjunction with the Second International Conference on Complex, Intelligent and Software Intensive Systems (CISIS 2008), 4-7 March, 2008, Technical University of Catalonia, Barcelona, Spain. Published by IEEE CPS, 2008, ISBN: 978-0-7695-3109-0, pp: 892-896<tel:892-896>.

- Journal paper: Moein Mehrolhassani and Atilla Elçi (2008): Developing Ontology Based Applications of Semantic Web Using UML to OWL Conversion. In The Open Knowledge Society. Let me know should you need copies.

Cheers,

Subject: UML => OWL, SKOS => OWL?

[cid:image001.gif@01CFC6A1.ADB15CB0]
Folks,

I’m looking for:

1) Formalizations, methods, implementations, tools that convert/transform UML object models into OWL ontologies in a structure- and semantics-preserving way.

2) Also, approaches that map SKOS vocabularies (especially codelists) in a reasonable fashion to OWL ontologies. E.g., as value enumerations of ranges of data or object properties.

Concerning (1), I’m aware of early UML => DAML work, circa 2001-2. I am also aware of more recent work such as:

Do you know of other such work?

Also, do you know of work addressing (2)?

Thanks much!
Leo
