Knowledge Discovery deals with the content-driven identification and localization of digital objects such as semi-structured data on the web (i.e., Linked Open Data), Documents, Profiles, or Communities and understanding the relationships among them. It involves the design of innovative methodologies and algorithms and their application to extensive data and document corpora of different origin and quality, also known as Big Data. The newly formed Knowledge Discovery Group at Kiel University in Germany is offering a PhD position starting from April 2014. The position is initially limited to two years with the option for extension. Main Tasks:The PhD student will develop in his/her research novel methods and algorithms in the area of Knowledge Discovery. Research topics include but are not limited to: * Application of semantic technologies for an improved discovery on structured and semi-structured data * Mining of semi-structured data in the web (Linked Open Data) and meta-data (e.g., bibliographic data) * Development of visual analytics tools for Knowledge Discovery In addition, it is expected that the candidate will actively provide support in teaching activities. Requirements:Very good Master’s degree in computer science or related discipline from a university. Excellent analytical skills, interests in interdisciplinary research questions and conducting research in general. A mathematical education or mathematical background of the applicant is an advantage. The university aims to increase the proportion of female PhD students in research and teaching. Thus, qualified women are explicitly encouraged to apply for the position. Woman with equal occupational aptitude, skills, and professional competence will be preferred.
