Wow, that's a blast from the past! It was Kraig Brockschmidt's 'Inside OLE' in 1995 that got me into component-based development, having previously seen a spark in VBX marketplaces, and my bachelor's thesis, and from there Web Services via DCOM, and hence semantics. I'm afraid I'm no help, especially on document-based linking and embedding, but it's nice to be reminded.
