The Smarter Cities Technology Centre (SCTC) at IBM's Dublin Research Laboratory, Ireland is accepting applications for full-time researchers from entry-level through principal investigators - http://www.ibm.com/ie/nowhiring/index.html -. 1) Researcher - Social Semantic Web We are researching novel ways to enable citizens, services, and service providers to interact coherently in a smarter city. We are creating and leveraging Social Media and Web 2.0 software tools that help to capture, organize and benefit from the wealth of city data being generated by urban and environmental sensors, including citizen-contributed data. We are looking for researchers with strong expertise in the areas of: - Social Media and Web 2.0, preferably with geospatial application - Capturing, representing, exploiting social media and crowd-sourced information - Enabling users and developers to easily leverage linked open data as an information source - Collaborative, end-user-driven knowledge enrichment 2) Research Scientist - Knowledge Representation and Reasoning We are researching novel representations and algorithms to enable decision makers to exploit urban and environmental data and information and linked open data. We are creating efficient representations to express and reason about spatial and temporal concepts, tools for to automate knowledge acquisition from people and repositories, and systems for large scale knowledge management. Relevant areas include: - Knowledge modelling, - Representation, inference and reasoning systems - Implementation and optimisation of knowledge acquisition systems and applications - Representation & reasoning on spatio-temporal data 3) Researcher - Distributed Information Systems We are researching novel data and information management algorithms and systems for very large scale, federated (e.g., linked open data), and continuously evolving data and knowledge repositories. We are creating distributed information systems required to model, manage, and manipulate the massive amounts of data generated to plan, monitor and intelligently control urban infrastructures and protect our environment. We are looking for researchers with strong expertise in the areas of: - Scalable data management for spatial, temporal, and semantic data streaming and stored - Efficient representations and extensible interfaces for city-scale repositories and linked open data to enable offline and real-time analytic workload - Automatic and semi-automatic creation, extension, and mapping of semantic and data models - Automatic and semi-automatic assessment of context, provenance, and trustworthiness of data, especially in large, dynamic, federated systems 4) Research Scientist - Machine Learning / Data Mining / Learning Systems We are hiring researchers in machine learning , data mining, statistical analysis, predictive modeling, and learning systems. We are especially interested in candidates with strong background and experience in dealing with data, control, or planning of urban or environmental systems such as transportation and mobility services, sustainable energy (smart grid, renewable energy, intelligent buildings), and water management. Projects will involve identifying applications of data-intensive machine learning, invention of effective algorithms for these applications, and incorporation of these algorithms in distributed and parallel software systems. 5) Research Scientist - HCI with emphasis on Geospatial We are hiring researchers in human computer interaction for geospatial analysis, spatio-temporal statistical modelling, geocomputation, and associated visualisation. The successful candidate will develop algorithms and interfaces that enable integration of geospatial information into urban and environmental systems, including transportation and mobility services, sustainable energy (smart grid, renewable energy, intelligent buildings), and water management. Projects will include geographic data mining and knowledge discovery, multi-scale spatio-temporal analysis, and development of analytic and visualisation tools to support exploring, understanding and communicating geospatial information, and incorporation of resulting analytics in distributed and parallel software systems. 6) Research Scientist - Intelligent Transportation Systems We are hiring researchers in transportation science, e.g., transportation modelling, data analysis, visualisation, simulation, and control. The successful candidate will develop analytics and algorithms for intelligent transportation systems. Projects will involve data analysis for large-scale, distributed transportation networks; integration of multi-modal transportation data sources; optimisation, control and decision services for both public services and citizen consumption; and incorporation of results in distributed and parallel software systems. 7) Research Scientist - Robust Optimisation and Control We are hiring researchers in statistical modelling, optimisation, and applied mathematics. The successful candidate will develop analytical models using large-scale and multi-dimensional data sets, with a focus on intelligent planning and control of urban and environmental systems, including intelligent management of constrained resources (e.g., water, energy), transportation and mobility services, and sustainable energy. Projects will involve identifying applications of data-intensive modelling, invention of suitable algorithms and models for these applications, integration of those with control strategies and incorporation of resulting analytics in distributed and parallel software systems. 8) Research Scientist - Sustainable Energy Analytics and Systems We are hiring researchers in data analysis, modelling, simulation, visualisation, and intelligent control of energy systems. The successful candidate will develop analytics and algorithms for sustainable energy systems. Projects involve data analysis, simulation, optimisation, and control of energy systems, including techniques for managing stability of energy networks, smart grid, and intelligent buildings or campus management, and incorporation of results in software systems The full advertisement for those positions can be found at http://www.ibm.com/ie/nowhiring/index.html
