To summarise, my initial comment was: Although this is straight out of the RFC, it is not good enough for proper use. HEXDIG should include "a"-"f" ipchar, iunreserved and ucschar should have a "-" before the rule. The grammar is ambiguous, but that needs work to investigate. But we should recognise that the purpose of RFC 3987 is to define the syntax of a correct IRI; our purpose on the other hand is to reveal the structure. So my proposal: we create two versions, one which is the plain RFC version mostly untouched, and the other a version that is unambiguous, and delivers a more useful structure. I am happy to do that and am working on it, but not yet complete. Steven
