AFAIK we're looking for a term we can all use, hence generality is (IMHO) key.
ixml textual input (from a string or text file).

I'm less bothered about xslt 3.0 confusion... In fact, why do we care
where it comes from?

Anyone object to

ixml textual input

My concern might be a mix up with a grammar (in text), would adding
'user' help or hinder?

That's a good example of parsing some string data that is not presented as a file.

Fair point, plain string is a possibility.
