One of the major issues that need to be resolved is the handling of host names in IRIs. The discussion on the IDNA list points out some differences between IDNA, browser behavior, and what was previously in the HTML5 specification. See http://www.alvestrand.no/pipermail/idna-update/2009-October/date.html I think it's going to be hard to resolve the URL/IRI issues until there's some agreement between IDNA and browser implementations. I'm glad to see there is an active attempt to resolve the issues among the concerned parties. Internationalized domain names appear both in web addresses and URLs but also in email addresses, so perhaps the right venue for the discussion belongs in the IDNA working group. It's clear that the current IRI drafts discussion of domain names doesn't match either implementations or best practice. Larry -- http://larry.masinter.net
