**Dr. Jeff Johnson**
If a website or app’s target audience includes older adults, certain aspects of its design become more important. This talk describes age-related factors that affect ability to use websites and apps, and presents design guidelines that reflect the capabilities, usage patterns, and preferences of older users.

• Age-related factors affecting ability to use computers and online services,
• Common design problems that decrease usability for older adults,
• Design guidelines that can help designers avoid these common pitfalls.

1:15 - 2:15 pm EST **Designing Products with Information Architecture in Mind: Prioritizing Accessibility and Standards**

**Dr. Rupananda Misra**, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey 
Information Architecture plays a critical role in the design of any product, shaping how users navigate and experience it. With nearly 27.2% of people in the U.S. living with some form of disability, including 17.2% with severe disabilities (Census 2014), the need for inclusive design has never been greater. This talk explores how Information Architects can create accessible and empowering products, ensuring that users of all abilities have a positive and seamless experience. By focusing on accessibility and adhering to design standards, we can transform how people with disabilities engage with technology.

**Also**: Usability, accessibility, and UX professionals of all levels.

2:30 - 3:30 pm EST **Architecting Standards: Leveraging Information Architecture to Drive Emerging Techn Standards**

**Noreen Whysel**, City University of New York (CUNY)
In this talk, Noreen will show how standards bodies can learn from the IA field to improve accessibility and usability. By adopting user-centered design principles and engaging in iterative feedback loops, standards organizations can create more relevant and practical standards that align with real-world applications. Emphasizing collaboration with industry experts and end-users will help ensure that standards evolve along with technological advancements.

She will examine key standards such as ISO 9241, which provides guidelines for usability and user-centered design, and the W3C's Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), ensuring that digital content is accessible to all users, including those with disabilities.

Finally, with new forms of digital interaction like GenAI, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), voice interaction, and other
emerging technologies, Noreen will highlight how IA can provide a working framework in the absence of formal standards.

### Jeff Johnson

Jeff Johnson, Ph.D. is an Adjunct Professor of Computer Science at USF-CA. After earning B.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Yale and Stanford Universities, he worked as a UI designer, implementer, manager, usability tester, and researcher at Cromemco, Xerox, US West, Hewlett-Packard, and Sun. He has taught at Stanford, Mills, the University of Canterbury (NZ), and USF-CA.

He is a member of the ACM SIGCHI Academy, a recipient of SIGCHI's Lifetime Achievement in Practice Award, and an ACM Distinguished Member.

He has authored articles on a variety of topics in Human-Computer Interaction, as well as the books GUI Bloopers (eds. 1 & 2), Web Bloopers, Designing with the Mind in Mind (eds. 1, 2, & 3), Conceptual Models: Core to the Design of Interactive Applications (eds. 1 & 2, with Austin Henderson), and Designing User Interfaces for an Aging Population (with Kate Finn, Ph.D.). Jeff and Kate are currently updating the latter book to produce a 2nd ed.

### Noreen Whysel

Noreen is a Brooklyn-based teacher and researcher with over 25 years of experience in the fields of IA and standards development. She teaches UX design at CUNY City Tech’s BFA program.

Her recent, published work with Internet Safety Labs, Kantara Initiative, and the Information Architecture Gateway (IAG) helps scientists, policymakers and engineers build safe, accessible and inclusive technologies.

At Decision Fish, she and her husband Brett provide consulting, mentoring and research services to startups and non-profits and host a monthly Behavioral Economics NYC meetup.

Noreen is a co-founder and Information Director at Information Architecture Gateway (IAG).

### Rupananda Misra

Rupananda Misra, Ed.D., is a faculty member and director of MBS’s User Experience Design (UXD) concentration. A skilled educator with special expertise in health informatics and educational technology, Dr. Misra shapes curriculum and advises students within in MBS’s Computer &amp; Information Sciences track, particularly within User Experience Design, Information Technology, and Social Media &amp; Networking concentrations.

Dr. Misra holds a doctorate in Communications, Media, and Learning Technologies Design from Teachers College, Columbia University, where he also completed a post-doctoral fellowship for the world’s largest biomedical library—the National Library of Medicine, part of the National Institutes of Health. Focusing on health informatics, Dr. Misra applied his extensive experience with web/mobile technologies, human-computer interaction, and design thinking in healthcare to examine the use of participatory and user-centered interaction design methods when creating effective healthcare tools and when generating and evaluating the viability of alternative designs.

Dr. Misra is the author of Digital Games for Minority Student Engagement (IGI Global, 2018). Additionally, he has published eight papers, and three book chapters, and has given presentations at numerous conferences.
