Proposal: Events and User Context

Please note: the following proposal reflects what I take to be a strand of agreement among most but not all participants in the meeting today. It does not necessarily reflect my personal view as to what should be done.

1. A task force between WebApps and APA to develop a specification, Intention Events 1.0, to carry forward the work of the IndieUI Events draft and the editing events proposed by WebApps.

Note: I’m using the WebApps terminology in the suggested name.

2. A work effort within APA to develop requirements for disclosing accessibility-related individual needs and preferences to Web applications, and to collaborate with other working groups (notably the CSS working group) to incorporate these into appropriate W3C specifications, e.g., as CSS media queries.

Greater clarity as to the deliverables is needed here - in particular, as to whether there would be a residual “User Context” specification that provides for a Web IDL API and addresses preferences that are not amenable to inclusion a CSS media features.

I think we also need a clearer understanding of the scope of the proposed work. It definitely includes:

a. The development of specific needs and preferences that can be conveyed to a Web application via appropriate mechanisms (APIs or media queries).

b. Refinement of the privacy model (in collaboration with the CSS wg).

c. Potentially, the creation of an extension mechanisms to allow other preference sets such as GPII to be made available via this mechanism, without integrating them into the core preference set that would be universally supported by implementations.

Aside from the proposal to move all of the work into groups outside the WAI activity, which is controversial, I think the above is an approximation of the solution with which members of this working group would be most comfortable, based on the opinions expressed in the survey and at the meeting.
