Re: What is the position of the IDCG wrt using the diversity fund for Kim Crayton's antiracist workshop? (was: Urgent - Re: IDCG volunteers for the W3C's Diversity Fund selection committee (2020))

Maybe an alternate proposal is if we don’t touch the W3C donation to the fund, that can be used, instead of the contributions from companies, which we can reserve for TPAC or future events.

I do agree I don’t want it to look like we’re spending money on ourselves, and I’m personally going to cover my attendance, but I would love to see us encourage people to attend.

The total cost is $90, as I imagine it’s probably important to watch all 3 parts of the workshop.

I will admit to having some qualms about this substitution. How many of us would attend the online workshop and pay for it ourselves anyway? Personally, I'd rather see the funds continue to go to opportunities for people who would otherwise not have them, so I would vote for saving them for people to attend a physical meeting next year. This feels a little too much like spending money on ourselves.

Hi all,

I volunteered to represent the IDCG in the diversity fund selection committee.

Part of the decision the committee has to make is how to reattribute unused funds.

In the below email, I suggested using those to purchase tickets to Kim Crayton's "Being antiracist at work" online workshop and give them to interested TPAC participants (the workshop is held the day after TPAC).

I'd like to be able to represent the IDCG's opinion in this committee and not just my own. So what do you all think?

Are you in favor of using part of the diversity fund for this or would you rather see it reattributed for next year's event?

Thanks for your input,

I’ve just written to the TPAC 2020 diversity fund selection committee and made them aware of your suggestion below, as they only are empowered to make a decision.

That decision is to be taken this week.

Since you are among the two IDCG reps in that committee, please kindly feed back to them any input from the IDCG.

Kim's answer was that running such workshops is (understandingly) a lot of emotional work and that she would rather W3C members join her "Being antiracist at work" online workshop (https://being-antiracist.com/) which she is running on October 31st, very conveniently the day after TPAC.
