Other site changes

Spurred by the talks at Web Design World last week, I have begun making some small changes to the site - mainly the home page at /International.

I moved the search link to the top right, since that is reckoned to be where most people automatically scan for search. I moved the RSS and news filter info there too. This makes the right side of the home page much cleaner and easier to read. (I also recently added link elements to indicate on the user agent that there are RSS feeds on the page.)

I used a coloured box to highlight the topic index list, to draw the eye there as a high priority. This list has been there for ages, but a number of people I've come across just don't seem to see or use it. Hopefully this will change things. It's now very noticeable.

I also worked on the order of items in the topic list, as requested by Leslie.

After advice from the systems team, I'm also close to being able to add a 'Search the i18n site' field - allowing people to search for things within /International. This was also an idea that came out fo Web Des World.

I have also begun discussions with Ivan Herman to create a page listing all i18n related translations from his RDF db, and make that accessible from the main translation site. (We can of course link to that from our pages too). (Btw, I've been announcing translations on the translators list lately, and that seems to be producing additional interest in translating our stuff.)

I plan to further investigate structure of the information wrt people using screen readers. I would recommend a Firefox extension I learned about from the Web Standard Group for this: http://www.standards-schmandards.com/index.php?2004/11/22/8 With a right mouse click on the page in question, this displays what a screen reader would see. Useful !
