I looked through some of those cited above, and couldn't find any where the <rb> element wasn't just a waste of the author's time. Note that despite repeated claims to the contrary, none of the browsers actually support <rb> any differently than any other random element like <foo>. (For example, try <ruby><rb>base<rt>annotation</ruby> in the live DOM viewer. Notice how the <rb> element does not close the <rt> element.)
