UAX9 autodetection is indeed not a particularly intelligent way to autodetect the paragraph direction. However, it is a) dead simple b) compatible with UAX9's recommendation for plain text c) stable wrt user input (only changing the first character switches direction) d) easily manipulatable -- the base direction can predictably be changed by changing the first character of the paragraph, either by rephrasing or by inserting LRM/RLM There will be developers who want to do more intelligent detection. Google, for example, has and will continue to spend a lot of effort on intelligent detection. But most developers don't understand bidi, and won't expend so much effort on getting it right. This feature makes it much, much easier for developers to get some measure of bidi intelligence in their apps.
