What you're asking for is actually available if you look at the source text. See the alt attribute for each figure image. You're right, though, that i should make that accessible for the general reader, and i started thinking about how to do that but didn't yet decide on how – it should be a way that can be used across all our articles. Thanks for nudging me: i'll raise the priority on my things to do list.
