In the meantime, you may find this illuminating: - [Bopomofo on the Web](https://r12a.github.io/scripts/bopomofo/ontheweb) - [Requirements for Chinese Text Layout – 中文排版需求](https://w3c.github.io/clreq/#interlinear_annotations) Basically, bopomofo ruby in not normally rendered above the base, but rather each character is annotated to its right side with one vertical column containing the syllabics and one of the tones, and if other tones are used they appear in a second column, where the tone marks are aligned with the syllabics in various ways.
