For me, born and raised in a LTR world, the terms "before" and "after" are synonyme to "left" and "right" – until one learns XSL-FO where they have a clear direction-dependent meaning. If it is not totally clear from the context, I would suggest to make it clear if "before" means "RTL before" (= appearing to the right of other glyphs) or "LTR before".
