Deprecating DOMActivate

Hi, folks-

(CCing public list)

My apologies for missing today's HCG call. I meant to attend, but was
working until the wee hours and my alarm failed to wake me.

I see that deprecating the DOMActivate event type was on the agenda
today, which is a topic I would like to be there for. I appreciate your
not taking up the agendum in my absence, and I would like to request
that we add it to the agenda next time; I would also like to ask that
the minutes for the discussion be public, since WebApps is a public WG
and all its technical work and decisions need to be made in public.

I have devoted considerable time and energy to this issue, since it is a
sensitive topic. Before the discussion, I would appreciate if people
could take the time to read the current wording in the spec regarding
activation behavior [1], DOMActivate [2], click [3], and the definition
of "deprecated" as used in the specification [4], as well as the outline
emails I wrote regarding XForms [5] and accessibility [6] (based on
earlier feedback). You may find that some of your concerns are
addressed there.

If there are other issues I failed to consider, if I wasn't clear enough
in my emails or especially in the spec itself, or if you simply don't
have the time to read the spec or summary emails, I'm perfectly happy to
go into as much detail as required during the telcon to make sure that
this is the right decision. Any interested parties are also welcome to
join one of the DOM3 Events telcons to address more detailed technical
issues.

To me, it's not enough for DOM3 Events to simply specify detailed and
consistent behavior, with a strong technical basis; we also have to have
realistic implementation, deployment, and authoring goal, and we have to
examine the current landscape, including dependencies by other
specifications on DOM3 Events. I am committed to consensus in editing
DOM3 Events, and I strongly want to avoid disagreements during Last
Call; it's important to me to get it right, and to make sure that
everyone can live with the resulting spec.

Obviously, since there are strong opinions on both sides of this issue,
not everybody will end up equally satisfied. I'm hopeful that when
everyone reads the specification and the explanatory emails, you will
agree that this is a responsible path forward.
