This mere URL is something you can work with depending on the protocol and methods in force (for HTTP you can GET it, PUT it, whatever the operation/link says). It is/will be part of the graph. Without IRI templates you would need to provide all those reasources somehow. With IRI template you can learn a client on how to do it all by itself.
