Making your docs more understandable

Several years ago I was developing HTML courses
for IBM mainframe (z/OS) programmers.

Now I'm "retired" and find myself developing
HTML courses for a wider audience.

In exploring the source sites / papers for
current standards I see things have changed
quite a bit.

But coming in after an absence, it seems like
a whole new wierd world: a world where no one
explains what a concept is or what it's for.

For example, I just shake my head when I come
to the DOM write up and see

   "Mixin - NonElementParentNode"

but: what's if for? Why is it there?

Same with Shadow Tree. And lots more.

There is all the techno babble rules and attributes,
      but:

where do I go to find a narrative desrcibing
how these things got added to the standard?

why did someone think they were good ideas?

why does anyone use them? what for?

So I was hoping maybe you could suggest a site where
motivation, usage, and rationale are discussed,
rather than just the tech specs.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Kind regards,
