Wasn't microdata already an attempt to unify RDFa and microformats and
supersede both?

I really like microdata because it's as simple to use as
microformats while being a native and much cleaner approach than hacking
classnames (which in my opinion confuses semantics and styling).

Google,
Microsoft and Yahoo! have already adopted microdata as their primary choice
and even teamed up once again (like they did before with the sitemaps
protocol) to push microdata and the semantic web forward (see
http://schema.org).
