While we can debate such use cases, the ability for the user agent to
understand and parse messages to the CDM (e.g. licenses) would allow the user
agent to validate (and possibly sanitize) data passed to update() before
passing it to the CDM as is currently done for the initData passed to
generateRequest() (bug 26838).
