Do you have a good authoritative source or two for the precise definition of
codec? Wikipedia is not an authoritative source, but seems very clear on the
point that a specification is different from its implementations, and an
implementation (not the coding specification) is called a codec:

I have actually looked a good deal, without finding anything really good. Many
other google results for "codec definition" seem fuzzy in their definitions.
