Those performance differences seem like low-hanging fruit that browsers should
fix. I really see no reason why setting the font to a previously-set value need
be _that_ slow. I recommend filing bugs with the browsers in question.

All this talk of panels is making me wonder what you're using <canvas> for,
though. Are you sure you're not abusing it for something that it's not really
intended for? Wouldn't CSS be the better way to do this?
