While I am not sure what the use case is for preserving leading and trailing
whitespace, trimming whitespace would be a backwards incompatible change. Only
trimming whitespace when the required="" attribute is set would be
inconsistent. If we do anything I would still favor something like what I
suggested in comment 1.
