http://www.w3.org/Bugs/Public/show_bug.cgi?id=13651 Summary: Missing alt should not be considered conforming in the presence of figcaptions over 50 words in length. Product: HTML WG Version: unspecified Platform: Other OS/Version: All Status: NEW Keywords: a11y, a11ytf Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: HTML5 spec (editor: Ian Hickson) AssignedTo: ian@hixie.ch ReportedBy: janina@rednote.net QAContact: public-html-bugzilla@w3.org CC: mike@w3.org, public-html-wg-issue-tracking@w3.org, public-html@w3.org Created attachment 1020 --> http://www.w3.org/Bugs/Public/attachment.cgi?id=1020 [2] http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-html-a11y/2011Aug/0011.html The Last Call Working Draft of the HTML5 spec considers missing alt conforming in the presence of figcaption, per the HTML WG Co-Chairs' decision [1]. However, figure caption usage in certain types of publications, including some educational and scientific publications, includes instances where figure captions are much more verbose than what is useful or approprirate for alternative text. For instance, some figure captions may be 50, 100, or even more than 250 words long; and such lengthy figure captions may be too distracting to be useful to people who are consuming alt . In addition, some of these longer types of figure caption do not include information that is relevant to use as an alt substitute. For instance they may instead include information about experimental methodology used in processing samples, but without indicating the type of image shown, nor anything about the results shown in an image. Additional background and a variety of examples are provided [2]. Missing alt should not be considered conforming in the presence of figcaptions over 50 words in length, except where the base language is that of an agglutinative language [3], in which case the threshold for considering missing alt non-conforming in the presence of figcaption should be figcaptions of over 20 words in length. -- Configure bugmail: http://www.w3.org/Bugs/Public/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are the QA contact for the bug.
