[Bug 11046] Which kind of data could be passed to this method. Could it be custom data types started with "application/"?

Is the spec not unambiguous? It's not clear to me what needs clarifying here.
What kind of change would you recommend to address this? More examples? More
notes? More text in the domintro block?
