I personally have no horse in this race; I'm most happy to have HTML5 require
what the XPath working group would like it to require. Please let me know what
the XPath working group's opinion is on this topic so that I can update the
spec accordingly.

Again, the only reason we added this text in the first place was to make XPath
1.0 compatible with HTML5, which I had expected to be desired by the working
group; if such compatibility isn't desired, that's fine. (We have similar text
to make HTML5 compatible with Selectors.) I expect discussion of a new language
specifically for HTML would be best handled by a separate group; I don't think
it would belong in HTML5 proper.
