Re: CP, ISSUE-30: Link longdesc to role of img [Was: hypothetical question on longdesc]

Silvia,

Point of clarrification (that has been made in the past) - attributes cannot take attributes, so there is no programmatic way to link @aria-label to @poster.

We have spent thousands of hours on longdesc, and probably tens on longdesc for video, and essentially none on a whole host of much more real problems than longdesc-for-poster. If we solve longdesc-for-poster and fail to do anything for video description, video transcript, etc., then the hypothetical user in my example will be able to get what I showed: a beautiful, detailed description of one visually representative or suggestive frame, but still no possibility of learning what the video would have taught them if they had been able to view it. That's simply wrong. That user has been let down by our lack of focus.

Worse still: if we do not solve the more important questions first,
Web developers will misuse the attributes that are available for the
important use cases that they need to resolve, since they will not
understand how a larger need cannot have been taken care of. They will
misinterpret the attributes.

I agree that we need to resolve the transcript issue at a higher
priority than the poster-alt issue, in particular since many among us
still don't agree that a poster-alt solution is actually required with
@aria-label being available.

Regards,
Silvia.
