As an ACTION item from Tuesday's text call, I have knocked together a rudimentary page that tests structured content in hidden divs, to illustrate the problems that "flattened" text can have for screen readers. The page can be found here: http://john.foliot.ca/html5/w3c/hidden.html I've done some basic testing with the tools I have (JAWS 13, NVDA, FF14, IE9), but welcome other testers, especially daily screen reader users, to provide comments and feedback to this list as you see fit. This is related to Issue 204: http://www.w3.org/html/wg/tracker/issues/204. Cheers!
