[css-houdini-drafts] [css-layout-api] Is there any way to access the properties of children of an element that uses `display: layout(foo)` ? (#1082)

Slapbox has just created a new issue for https://github.com/w3c/css-houdini-drafts:

== [css-layout-api] Is there any way to access the properties of children of an element that uses `display: layout(foo)` ? ==
Regarding this spec: https://github.com/w3c/css-houdini-drafts/blob/main/css-layout-api/EXPLAINER.md

I wonder if there's any way to access child properties during the layout? For example, if some elements in the layout need to be displayed differently, how could we identify and target them? Is it possible?
