Dimitre Novatchev describes an elegant and amusing system for robust
functional programming in XSLT in the paper "Functional programming in
XSLT using the FXSL library"[0].  I would particularly start at section
"Functions in XSLT"[1].  I would be happy to help work towards this
approach with you, if you are interested.
