RE: Taxonomy Terms for GAO D03 and D04

Dear Tom

Thanks for the post. I'm sure we will soon have many discussions about final
scope of GAO.

However, as we indicated in "Aim and Scope" of GAO
(http://www.automotive-ontology.org/) we plan to create Ontologies that
create at Web scale.

This means that the ontologies we work on should not be too granular. This
also implies that they should rather cover the conceptual domains related to
car sales rather than domains related to car production and/or servicing.

While I see nothing wrong in the sample terms you mention, and indeed they
mostly fall into the scope of deliverables D03 (and some into D04) - I think
that taxonomies like Wand's should be considered as a reference rather than
as a source of terms.

Of course, the expected opening of auto.schema.org will also open path to
more terms and finer granularity, but we will always face trade-offs between
the breadth of the ontology and requirements of it being "light" - so
important for ontologies designed to work on Web scale.

I'm grateful for your post as it signals an important topic for discussions.
We plan to open it soon after publication of auto.schema.org.

As for TU-Automotive, let's stay in touch on June 3rd and try to setup the
meeting on 4th (or 5 if you stay in the town)
