Hi Felix -

buddycloud does exactly this: share media between different users on
different domains.

channel: cat-pictures@example.com
has followers:
  cat-woman@example.org,
  cat-guy@example.net
  cat-kid@example.com.

Any of them can upload and share media in cat-pictures@example.com and one
another will have access.

Permissioning is negotiated via XMPP, content is delivered via HTTP.
