AW: Canonical EXI Interoperability Test Framework?

Hi John, all,

we recently moved our internal test framework to a public github space [1]. Doing so should allow you and others in the public to check interoperability before the Canonical EXI specification goes to Proposed Recommendation status.

Note: As indicated the Canonical EXI framework is under way and we know that some portions are still missing. Hence we also encourage anyone to create Pull Requests or create Github issues.

More information on "how" to run the tests et cetera can be found in the README.md. Currently two implementations are integrated (OpenEXI and EXIficient) and anyone can check the generated results on a byte-by-byte level.

Please let us know your feedback via the tools provided by Github.

Thanks,

-- Daniel

Daniel,

Thank you for your quick response! I’m glad to hear your work on the Canonical EXI interoperability test framework is well under way. Not only will this help improve interoperability, but it will also help to wring out the specification prior to approval.

Do you plan to release the test framework to the public before the specification goes to Proposed Recommendation status? Generally, the best time to release an interoperability framework is during the Candidate Recommendation phase, so implementers can have a good opportunity to provide feedback. However, I noticed that the feedback period for the first Candidate Recommendation has already passed.

Thanks again,

John

Hi John, all,
Thank you for mentioning interoperability testing.
The EXI working group is already working on an Canonical EXI interoperability test framework.
We are in the phase of collecting and defining test-cases.
Once the framework is stable we will definitely inform you and the public!
Thanks,

Taki,

During the Candidate Recommendation phase of the original EXI specification, the EXI working group released a version of the EXI Interoperability Test Framework that implementers could use to verify their understanding of the specification and ensure implementation interoperability.

Given the requirement for bit-for-bit compatibility between Canonical EXI implementations, I think it would be particularly useful — perhaps even necessary — for the working group to release a version of the EXI Interoperability Test Framework for the Canonical EXI specification.

Would it be possible for the working group to do this?

        Thank you,

        John
