Hi All, This is my first post, so please let me know if I'm missing the point. I design web sites for a living and constantly argue for web standards. I think the biggest arguement against coding with standards that I have come across is the point that I think Livio is making. Coding in a semantic manner restricts the possible look and feel of the site and makes pixel perfect renditions of the site in old browsers impossible. To my mind, this arguement assumes that the most important feature of a web site is the way it looks. I consider web design to be less like print design for the screen and more like architecture. The look of a building is less important that it's accessibility and stability. Building beautiful sites with CSS and XHTML is possible and as web designers it is our job to follow "best practice".
