Equity CG Minutes - 2023 October 23

Hello Equity folks,

Here are the minutes for today: https://www.w3.org/2023/10/23-equity-minutes.html

Summary

  * Sheri reviewed how to approach documenting equity for the maturity model. She proposed that the current Accessibility Maturity Model be expanded to include Equity Evidence.
  * The alternative is to have an Equity Extension.
  * Tzviya raised that the Sustainable Web Design group may also want to have a maturity model or contribute to a W3C Maturity Model. Jennifer said that a maturity model that included accessibility, equity, sustainability, and web performance would be logical as they are all connected. Security would also be a natural facet to include.
  * Sheri was chatting with David Fazio at the time who raised the point that with Large Language Models (LLM) equity is a significant concern.
  * Action Item: So, what we are doing as the Equity CG is adding example items under Evidence in this Google document for W3C Equity Maturity Model – Draft<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1NYbNIo0B0_sClW2pUiGQI3cK3dGDjl_YnC1qxtSkWh8/edit?usp=sharing>, everything here that we can think of for now — then we can review and revise language and placement, such as figure out which dimension it belongs to. We can each do this offline outside of the meeting(s). There are already Example bullet points drafted. Please note:
     * We’re using the word “Evidence” where the Accessibility Maturity Model currently uses “Proof Points.” (Evidence is clearer plain language, which is preferable from an equity perspective. David Fazio noted that in Latin America, proof points doesn’t translate well; we’ll want to connect with Jake Abma to understand reasoning for proof points if there is a European reason)
     * The Google doc link above is for Commenter access. If you would like an Editor link, please email me, as this is a public mailing list.
  * In the Equity CG Github, we've collected resources which may be reviewed to look for example evidence: https://github.com/w3c/equity-cg/blob/main/README.md
  * Any other public-facing examples of industry (or others) using/adopting W3C Maturity would be helpful. Feel free to email me or add to the Github resources.

Naturally, let me know if I can provide any clarification or answer any questions.

Thank you!
