We'd like people to introduce themselves, and give a brief description of their interests and goals for EPUB. If you don't feel like speaking up, or can't join the call, feel free to send an email to this group (public-epub3@w3.org) with the same information. [2] Work mode for the community group. We are hoping to mostly work asynchronously, through GitHub, email, etc. But calls can be useful for achieveing consensus, talking through difficult issues, etc. Would one call a month be enough? Too much? [3] Topics and subgroups. We have lots of things to work on! Some potential topics are listed below, but a major goal of the call is to find out what people are interested in working on. [A] EPUB 3.1 Maintenance. We already have a few issues (https://github.com/IDPF/epub-revision/issues) on the 3.1 spec, and more will certainly appear. [B] Accessibility. We plan to continue work on the EPUB Accessibility spec (http://www.idpf.org/epub/a11y/accessibility.html). [C] The spec formerly known as EDUPUB (http://www.idpf.org/epub/profiles/edu/spec/). We’ve been discussing how to approach EPUB for Education . Some parts of the spec may be worked on in the Publishing Working Group, as part of future versions of (P)WP/EPUB4. Some parts might be integrated into EPUB 3.1.X, or become part of the EPUB Accessibility spec. LTI integration and such might be handled by IMS. [D] Rendering. We hope to work with reading systems to provide more and better options for displaying complex or highly-designed books. For example, we’d love to have images that “bleed”, or extend to the absolute edge of the screen on one or more sides. This will be both complicated and fun! [E] Testing and Validation. My ultimate goal is for EPUB to be as well-tested as web browsers, but we are a long way from that. We can figure out what the next steps are, however. We also need to work on EPUBCheck, which does not yet support EPUB 3.1. ========================================= OTHER USEFUL (AND IMPORTANT) INFORMATION ========================================= ------ IRC ------ W3C groups use IRC (Internet Relay Chat) during meetings to take minutes, manage the queue of people wishing to ask questions or make comments, providing useful links, etc. We will use the IRC channel #epub3cg: channel: #epub3cg server: irc.w3.org port: 6665 or 6667 General information on IRC at W3C can be found at https://www.w3.org/Project/IRC/ ------------ GITHUB ------------- We have a general repository for the community group at: https://github.com/w3c/pub-cg Ivan Herman has written up a helpful guide for newcomers to GitHub at https://github.com/iherman/misc-notes/blob/master/docs/BasicGitHubContributionIntro.md If you don't already have a GitHub account, you might want to set one up before the first call. Thanks very much, and please let us know if you have any questions. Dave Cramer Rachel Comerford Co-chairs, W3C EPUB 3 Community Group https://www.w3.org/community/epub3/ public-epub3@w3.org
