Info for Upcoming Meetings + Meeting Cancelled January 19 2023

Hi all,

This week’s meeting will be cancelled, January 19, 2023.

We will be meeting next week and have a few items we would ask all participants to consider before next week.

  * Please review all three specifications – we will be voting to go to Proposed Recommendation (PR) next week
     *   EPUB 3.3<https://w3c.github.io/epub-specs/epub33/core/>
     *   EPUB Reading Systems 3.3<https://w3c.github.io/epub-specs/epub33/rs/>
     *   EPUB Accessibility 1.1<https://w3c.github.io/epub-specs/epub33/a11y/>
  * As part of going to PR, we will need to decide whether EPUB 3.3 will be a standard that allows new features<https://www.w3.org/2021/Process-20211102/#allow-new-features> (commonly known as a “living standard”) or remain on the standard revision process. This is a bit confusing, so to explain the difference:
     * The standard revision process would allow us to make some changes to the EPUB specification during the maintenance period, specifically class 1 and 2 changes<https://www.w3.org/2021/Process-20211102/#correction-classes>, without triggering review. These types of changes include errata or editorial corrections and clarifications. Substantive changes (class 3 and 4<https://www.w3.org/2021/Process-20211102/#correction-classes>) would require us to go through horizontal review, approval from management, no formal objections, and documentation of the changes we are making. This amendment process also includes us needing to confirm tests and implementations for new features. In essence, we’d need to start a Working Draft to complete these steps should this arise.
     * If we choose to allow new features, this allows us to use the more streamlined publication approval process<https://www.w3.org/2021/Process-20211102/#streamlined-update> in the event we need to make a substantive or feature change to the specification. We still need to meet the criteria mentioned above, like we had thus far, but we can do so starting from the Candidate Recommendation stage. We’d also record changes through a “Last Call for Review” process. There is less overhead in this streamlined process.
  * We will also be voting to send EPUB3.3 to ISO, so please consider that as well!

As part of the voting process, we will be doing it in the meeting as well as over email, just to ensure people unable to attend the North America/EU call can give us their input.

Please let us know if you have any questions, see you all next week!

Cheers,
Wendy
