At more of a micro and qualitative level, we (New Zealand) have been building a series of three sentence examples of how open government data has been beneficial to agencies: http://wiki.open.org.nz/Open_Data_Mini_Case_Studies. Sectors include education, social policy, heritage, forestry management and the environment.
