Minutes 2022-12-08

December 8, 2022
Editing WG

chair: johannes
scribe: smaug
(and sorry, these minutes were written in background, not using the typical W3C tooling, so errors and bad layout are all on me)
present: <this is missing because we didn't use the normal tools>

johannes: No agenda+ items.
johannes: Let's take a look at the charter and APIs there
johannes: Clipboard, input events, selection API. All have expected completion Q3 2022

johannes: Clipboard API
ACTION: johannes: will contact gary to ask about clipboard API status

smaug: we're working on the clipboard API
wenson: we've shipped most of it and will implement pickling in the future

johannes: Input Events
johannes: most of the controversies solved
johannes: unclear what is required to get into recommendation
johannes: Will contact w3c people
johannes: No major blocking points
johannes: Some issues about event ordering but those should have moved to UI events. Will ask gary

johannes: Selection API
wenson: I don't think rniwa has worked on that recently
johannes: could we ask rniwa what is happening
ACTION: wenson: will double check

johannes: other work
johannes: Virtual keyboard API
johannes That has been mostly microsoft
ACTION: sanket: will check the status of the Virtual keyboard API

johannes: EditContext API
johannes: MS has had big focus in editing
sanket: hasn't been too much progress recently in the spec nor in the implementation but we're still interested in.
sanket: There is partial implementation in chromium. Some issues on Mac

sanket: back to virtual keyboard
johannes: need to know the status. Is it still alive?
sanket: yes, and it has shipped

johannes: back to editcontext
johannes: does it have an editor?
sanket: Alex is still the editor
ACTION: sanket: will report where we are with editcontext

johannes: spellcheck API
johannes: no one is working on that
smaug: does highlight API give good enough API
johannes: the idea was to also give the browser knowledge where spellchecker could be used.
johannes: But the API is just in the possible-todo list.

johannes: best practices doc
johannes: Not done, no one is writing it atm
johannes: web devs are occasionally still using olds APIs, the doc would have recommendation

ACTION: johannes will contact the new members of the WG

johannes: should we have this meeting?
smaug: yes, we can cancel if needed
wenson: perhaps we could merge with interop meeting
johannes: how long will that meeting run
wenson: I assume that will run the whole 2023 and longer
johannes: ok, need to discuss with James
sanket: we'd like to have the next editing WG meeting
