On 3/20 someone in BetaNYC started a project to create a map of licensed day care centers in New York City. They wrote a scraper in Ruby to grab the data off a website and dump it into a CSV file, then someone figured out how to put the data right into a MongoDB database. Creating the map was easy. Ten days later they had this prototype up on the web: http://cdb.io/1hcvW98 Can you imagine any municipal government providing this kind of service in 10 days or less?
