Yes, the idea to introduce a ‘grouping’ class – which I understand is the role of version:VersionedThing – was brought up in our discussions but that did not seem to fit well with the way DCAT defines Datasets and Distributions of Datasets. We already discussed this a bit in the DWBP group but so far have not reached a solution.
Your views will be very valuable.

I'd agree with that.
FWIW, I think that datasets _should_ be versioned. As information resources they can evolve state over time.
WRT datasets, I would like to see a durable identifier (URI) for the dataset that covers its entire lifetime and other URIs for each version plus links between the versions. This is similar to the register item behaviour in the Linked Data Registry.
