Hi Mike, Thanks for pointing this out. I will add an issue to GitHub. Tzviya Tzviya Siegman Information Standards Lead Wiley 201-748-6884 tsiegman@wiley.com -----Original Message----- From: Michael[tm] Smith [mailto:mike@w3.org] Sent: Thursday, December 15, 2016 11:42 AM To: Siegman, Tzviya - Hoboken Cc: DPUB mailing list (public-digipub-ig@w3.org) Subject: Re: FW: Digital Publishing WAI-ARIA Module 1.0 is a W3C Candidate Recommendation (Call for Implementations and Review) Hi Tzviya, I notice that Abstract for https://www.w3.org/TR/dpub-aria-1.0/ says this: > Accessibility of web content requires semantic information about > widgets, structures and behaviors in order to allow assistive > technologies to convey appropriate information to persons with > disabilities. This specification defines a [WAI-ARIA] module > encompassing an ontology of roles, states and properties specific to the digital publishing industry. > These semantics are designed to allow an author to convey user > interface behaviors and structural information to assistive > technologies and to enable semantic navigation, styling and > interactive features used by readers. It is expected this will complement [HTML5]. That seems to just be a verbatim copy of the Abstract of of the ARIA spec itself at https://www.w3.org/TR/wai-aria-1.1/ but just with the part of one sentence replaced with “roles, states and properties specific to the digital publishing industry”. The problems in that dpub-aria Abstract are that it: * retains the words “widgets” but doesn’t define anything for widgets but instead just for structural divisions of documents * mentions “behaviors”* and “designed to allow an author to convey user interface behaviors but doesn’t define anything about behaviors nor about and user-interface features * mentions “states and properties specific to the digital publishing industry” but doesn’t define any ARIA states and properties specific to the digital publishing industry; instead it just defines new roles that only have the global ARIA states and properties, but no new states or properties specifically associated with those roles * mentions imprecisely “an ontology of roles specific to the digital publishing industry” when it should be more precisely mentioning the class of documents it is meant to address, and anyway specs (and especially this spec) should rightly always frame things in terms of *user* needs and never in terms of some vague “industry” needs So given all that I suggest the editors and the ARIA WG and DPUB IG consider reducing the Abstract to just something like the following: > Enabling users of assistive technologies to find their way through Web > content requires, along with embedding semantic metadata about Web- > application widgets and behaviors for assistive technologies to > consume, also embedding semantic metadata about Web-*document* > structural divisions—in particular for structural divisions of long-form documents. > This specification defines a set of WAI-ARIA roles specific to helping > users of assistive technologies navigate through such long-form documents. —Mike "Siegman, Tzviya - Hoboken" <tsiegman@wiley.com>, 2016-12-15 15:03 +0000: > Archived-At: > <http://www.w3.org/mid/SN1PR0201MB16152EAEA85DE263A6C25479D59D0@SN1PR0 > 201MB1615.namprd02.prod.outlook.com> > > Hi All, > > DPUB-ARIA is now a candidate recommendation. This specification defines a [WAI-ARIA] module encompassing an ontology of roles, states and properties specific to the digital publishing industry.
