RE: " what sort of design/typography/pagination problems people are having with ebooks." 1. Proper design treatments for print layouts when the ebook has a more limited layout-e.g., marginal notes. Marginal notes are widely used in print titles and are fairly effective but render horribly in most ebooks because many ebook readers and/or CSS designers designing for those readers do not support major/minor columns. as a result, marginal notes are often placed after a paragraph instead of beside a paragraph, and between that and losing formatting hints as to what they are, they completely confuse the reader. 2. Captions not staying on same page with images 3. Portrait layout images that make stunning chapter openers in print but are very diminished/diminutive/un-impressive in digital when reader is reading in landscape mode 4. sophisticated alignment in tables (e.g., align on decimal) On Mon, Jan 6, 2014 at 9:51 AM, Tom De Nies <tom.denies@ugent.be> wrote: > regrets for this week. > > Tom > > > 2014/1/6 Siegman, Tzviya - Hoboken <tsiegman@wiley.com> > > Hi Dave, >> >> >> >> I can scribe. >> >> >> >> +1 on Luc’s comments. >> >> >> >> Tables: similar issues to tables (keep with caption, avoid breaks) + >> aligning on char/location within column (beyond right-align, etc.) >> >> Tzviya >> >> >> >> **************************** >> >> Tzviya Siegman * Senior Content Technology Specialist * John Wiley & >> Sons, Inc. >> >> 111 River Street, MS 5-02 * Hoboken, NJ 07030-5774 * 201-748-6884 * >> tsiegman@wiley.com >> >> >> >> *From:* AUDRAIN LUC [mailto:LAUDRAIN@hachette-livre.fr] >> *Sent:* Monday, January 06, 2014 4:14 AM >> *To:* Cramer, Dave; Markus Gylling; public-digipub-ig@w3.org >> *Subject:* RE: draft agenda, DPUB IG concall January 6th 2014 >> >> >> >> Hi Dave, >> >> >> >> About design/typography/pagination problems in ebooks, here is my list : >> >> In Reflowable EPUBs >> >> - Horizontal justification of text : a good composition engine, >> please! >> >> - Hyphenation with proper language dictionary exceptions >> >> - Vertical justification with respect to widows/orphans, titles >> >> - Headers and footers >> >> - Footnotes in popups >> >> In Fixed Layout EPUBs >> >> - Absolute positioning of text at character level >> >> >> >> Best regards, >> Luc >> >> >> >> *De :* Cramer, Dave [mailto:Dave.Cramer@hbgusa.com<Dave.Cramer@hbgusa.com>] >> >> *Envoyé :* lundi 6 janvier 2014 02:19 >> *À :* Markus Gylling; public-digipub-ig@w3.org >> *Objet :* Re: draft agenda, DPUB IG concall January 6th 2014 >> >> >> >> On 1/3/14 11:58 AM, "Markus Gylling" <markus.gylling@gmail.com> wrote: >> >> >> >> Hi all, >> >> below is a draft agenda for the coming Monday's IG concall, which will be >> >> held at 16:00 UTC [0] (08:00 PST, 17:00 CET, 11:00 EST, 01:00 Tokyo). >> >> >> >> We are looking for a volunteer scribe.
