I remember having built my own IR receiver for the serial port based on [LIRC](https://www.lirc.org/receivers.html) in the mid-90ies to control my TV tuner PCI card. The use case you describe resonates with me, even today. I haven’t looked into this in ages, but how far would the Serial API get you with sensors one can get today?
