my personal perspective is that wakelock is an ill-fit for background location tracking, if only because of the complexity of the permisionning.

Note that using sensors in the background is also something that has been [discussed as part of (the next version of) the Generic Sensor API](https://github.com/w3c/sensors/issues/106).
