RE: [momolondon] New Voda gateways

I have some secondhand feedback from Vodafone: 

 

"Vodafone have launched a new Vodafone Live Service; and have changed the
Gateway" . "They are putting it back to how it was." . and . "It is a
Priority 1 with Vodafone".

 

Seems it is a mistake rather than an attempt to help. I guess it will be
back to normal soon enough (if not already; I haven't looked).

Unfortunately the changes in behaviour do not appear to be supported by the
means to determine automatically that the origin server is an adapting
server. By presenting a fake UA, the wrong content will be retrieved,
resulting in a degradation of service for many of customers. This will
affect people using WURFL/WALL, Cocoon or any other adaptation technology
that depends on the client being honest about what it is.

 

Of course, it shouldn't be too hard to monitor responses (from unsecured
home pages) to see how the server is responding, so that adapting sites can
be detected and remembered. Automatically. We could even consider an
extension like robots.txt so that sites could pre-emptively declare
themselves as adapting. Of course, there's no standard way of doing this
today, so it's something that will need consideration.

 

As for Vodafone, I'm sure they'll do something soon about the negative
effect that this may have on those who are offering mobile content, while
maintaining the potentially positive effect they can have on
non-adapting/non-mobile sites.

 

The Mobile Web is certainly a place for experimentation :)

PS I have no connection with this new behaviour of the Vodafone service, nor
can I speak on their behalf. I just think that they are trying to do
something to help, and that they'll be responsible operators and address the
observed shortcomings as quickly as they can. (And if they want help, I'm
sure many of us on this list will be happy to do so!)

As I am sure everybody who runs services will be aware Voda UK changed
their gateways for pay-monthly customers last night. All hits from any
device to a site not explicitly registered as "mobile" now gets given
a useragent of ...

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.0.7) Gecko/20060909
Firefox/1.5.0.7

.... which obviously makes it impossible to correctly detect the device
type. Interestingly the user MSISDN is also being passed at present
though suspect that won't last ;-)!

I was wondering if anybody had any information on how to get URLs onto
the mobile sites list and how to deal with setups where mobile and
non-mobile content live in the same tree?
